Why do they call perfumes/colognes....?

why are colognes and perfumes called ';eau de toilette';. Doesnt that mean toilet water in french? why is it called toilet water?

PS-what are sum of ur favorite fragrances? Why do they call perfumes/colognes....?
Perfume is the most expensive pure scent - the scent will stay on for the entire day if not into the next day.

Eau de toilette is the next step down from perfume, still up in price, but the scent will last for half the day or the whole day.

Cologne is the cheap crap that people really need to stop wearing entirely!!! It goes on way too strong, usually smells like wet socks. Whatever other scent it claims to smell like, only lasts for an hour at most.

My faves for women: Obsession and Obsession Sheer and Cool Water

For men: Obsession and Cool Water
